Executive Summary
We reviewed a real product-selection engagement: the client wanted to enter the portable power station category and sell into Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
From keyword and competitor data collection, to confirming the price band, to validating content and ad delivery, the full journey — from "should we do this at all" to "at what price, and with which selling points, do we list" — took 11 days, and the SKUs launched in the first month converted at 2.3 times the category average.
Product selection is never a gut call. It is a repeatable, data-backed decision process.
Starting Point: One Vague Idea and a Long List of Questions to Answer
The client's opening brief was simple: "We want to take power stations overseas, but we don't know whether to build a portable unit or a home unit, and we don't know whether Southeast Asia or the Middle East is the easier market to enter."
Answered by conventional manual research, questions like these typically take two to three weeks before you get a first working hypothesis — we compressed that into 11 days, not by "working harder" but by automating the data collection and analysis steps.
Step 1: Full-Web Data Collection — Establishing What the Competitive Set Actually Looks Like
We collected pricing distribution, review keywords and creator-driven sales data for the power station category across Amazon, TikTok Shop and Shopee in parallel, covering 340+ competitor listings in the two candidate markets, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
The conclusion was direct: the $20-40 range is the most contested, but it is also where demand concentrates — a red ocean that nonetheless carries real volume, making it the main price band.
The $60-90 range has fewer competitors yet review volume is not low, which points to a price-upside window — exactly the zone where the client's product strengths (larger capacity, faster charging) can be brought to bear.
Step 2: AI Probing Questionnaires and 4P Analysis — Establishing Why People Buy
Price and sales volume alone are not enough, so we ran a round of AI-driven probing questionnaires and concept tests among target users in both Southeast Asia and the Middle East, focused on one question: what are users actually paying for?
- Product: outdoor camping and power-outage emergencies are two clearly distinct use cases — the former weights weight and portability, the latter capacity and runtime.
- Price: the Middle East proved less price-sensitive than expected, with users more willing to pay a premium for fast charging.
- Place: in Southeast Asia, content-driven discovery on TikTok Shop converts markedly better than a conventional e-commerce product detail page.
- Promotion: creator review content converts at 1.6 times the efficiency of pure ad placements.
Step 3: Small-Scale Validation — Replacing Forecasts With Real Data
On the strength of those findings, we did not push volume immediately — instead we launched a small batch in Southeast Asia at a $68 price point with fast charging as the hero claim, ran creator review content alongside it, and let real conversion data replace subjective forecasting.
The Selection Method: Repeatable, Not Lucky
What this engagement validated is a general-purpose pipeline: full-web data collection to lock down the price band and competitive structure → AI probing questionnaires to surface real purchase motivation → a structured 4P output covering product, pricing, channel and content → small-scale live validation before deciding whether to scale.
Every step carries data behind it and every judgement can be traced, which is exactly why this pipeline transfers across categories and markets instead of being rebuilt from scratch each time.
